An overnight flight from Bogota to Santiago was always going to be a bit of a struggle but it was my only option to land in Santiago at a reasonable time. All the other flights had me landing at 3am and wasn’t really keen on trying to get a taxi and find my Air BnB accommodation at 3 in the morning. I arrive in Santiago without much sleep as there wasn’t much room in my seat and I now feel a little jet lagged. I grab a cab to my accommodation and head into the building. I ask the concierge in my best Spanish which could be Chinese for all they know, for Daniela. They have no idea what I am talking about so I show them them apt number of the owner. They appear to understand who I am looking for and make a call. Within a few minutes and nice girl turns up who can speak English. I figure this is one of Daniela’s friends or staff. I expect her to lead me to my room but she is trying to work out why the concierge has even called her. She has no idea about any room or anyone called Daniela. She escorts me to another office within the building to see another guy to try and work out where I am staying. They finally figure out who Daniela is and one of her staff comes down to greet me. For a moment I thought I had been scammed but everything works out ok. I settle in and take a nap for a few hours then head out to explore the city and find a coffee. Santiago is just another big city and doesn’t do much for me. However it is surrounded by the spectacular Andes if you can see them. It sits at 520m above sea level but is very smoggy. My apartment was on the 25th floor but I couldn’t see much because of the smog. I wander the streets and take in the local atmosphere and try and practice a little Spanish where I can.
“Me gustaría un café con un poco de agua caliente por favor.” I would like a coffee with a little hot water added please.
I am only here for a few days until Rachael arrives and we start our 3 week adventure. Rachael is flying into Santiago from Sydney then onto Calama, Chile. We were planning to meet in Calama as I couldn’t get a flight from Colombia to meet her but I manage to find a flight from Santiago to Calama at the same time but on a different airline so I am at the airpot when she arrives from Sydney. I jump out for behind a post as she is walking jet lagged through the airport and she gets a major fright.
