The culmination of our 3 day Lares Trek was to see Machu Picchu. After one night in the town of Machu Picchu we were up for yet another early start and onto the bus for the 400m steep climb to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. The half hour journey winds up a very step road then the ancient city comes into view. It is absolutely breath taking. Our guide, Jason, takes us on our 2 hour tour through this amazing place. Even though it is bustling with tourists it does’t feel as busy as expected. Wondering the city you can only be amazed at how the Inca people built this amazing place in the 15th century. Discovered by American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1912 with over 400 cases of artefacts and treasures being taken back to the USA and held at Yale university. Today the Peruvian government have requested the artefacts and treasures be returned to Peru to be displayed in a Museum.
After our tour we spent some time just sitting and taking in the beauty of the surrounding mountains that appear to just leap vertically from the earth and present themselves on all sides of Machu Picchu. Photo’s don’t do this place justice you really need to see it with your own eyes. We take the bus back down Machu Picchu town and meet up with the group for our train ride and another bus back to Cusco.
Its been a long few days but I have experienced some of the best scenery in all my travels.
