Where to start. Wow. This has to be one of the most amazing places on earth for just shear visual beauty. As I make my way around the endless windy road to Bellagio I am just awe struck by the scenery. The mountains seem to rise straight out of the water. Its just incredible. The roads are so narrow you can barely fit two cars on them and you need to fold in your side mirror just to pass. I am nearly taken out by a truck around a bend as he decided to overtake a cyclist whilst rounding the corner. Not sure how close I came to hitting the wall but it must of been cm’s. I arrive at my accommodation for the night Hotel De Lac. Situated right on the water it is pretty inexpensive for the location. The room is only small and like many european hotels it has only a single bed. However when travelling alone I don’t mind paying less for the single bed option as long as its comfy. I only have the one night and I am pretty tired from driving all day so I take a short walk and head back for a quick nap before dinner. I decide the following day to head to Florence. It has always been one of my favourite cities to visit. I drop the car off which is a welcome relief as I am over driving, however, I have found it pretty easy after driving so much on the US on teh other side of the road. The drive from Lake Como to Florence is about 4hours and although the Milan airport is slightly out of the way and I have to drop the car then head back into Milan Central by train to then catch the fast train to Florence . The overall trip time is the same. It also gives me the time to sit back and relax and enjoy the scenery. A business class ticket by train to Florence is about $100 AUD. for the 2hr trip. Cheaper and easier than flying. I so wish we had these high speed trains in Australia. I have booked a small studio apartment in Florence for 4 nights so I can chill out and cook. Its in the same area that I stayed 2 years ago with Andrew, right near the Ponte Vecchio. I love this side of the bridge. Its a bit quieter, if there is such a thing in Florence and has more of a local feel in the evenings. I settle in nicely and find myself a local cafe and the staff soon say good morning and place my order on the counter without me asking.
I am up in the air a little about what to do next but I have decided that I love the mountains so much that I will take a trip back to Lake Como to check it out a bit more then maybe onto Lake Geneva. Its so easy to get around via the train system and so relaxing compared to planes. No customs or baggage check in, no queues, and no delays, ever. They leave when they say they are going to leave. I arrive at my number ???? hotel on this trip and I am pleasantly surprised as it was inexpensive compared to everything else I could find but I absolutely love it. It is the best place I have stayed at so far. If the AUD hadn’t dropped so much over the last 18months it would be dirt cheap for this location. If you are planning a trip away soon start buying USD as the AUD is going south and making travel expensive again. 🙂 I won’t say anymore about Lake Como as I think the photos tell the story. I could think of worse places in the world to live. Boating in the summer and skiing in the winter. Heaven. 🙂 My hotel in Como is amazing. If my room had a little kitchen you could stay here for weeks. Hotel Posta
