This was my 2nd trip to Kangaroo Island and this place never stops amazing me. It is one of the most magical places to visit. Somewhat difficult and expensive to get to especially from Sydney but it does help having very close friends live in Adelaide. They provide the transport and do all the food and wine shopping for a 3 day getaway. The drive down to the ferry is fantastic and we stop and a beautiful restaurant for lunch about 30mins from the ferry. The ferry ride itself is about 45mins and pretty uneventful even on a rough day its pretty calm.
The island is much bigger than most people realise and to drive end to end takes about 2hours. More info here. We are here in the middle of winter which I just love. The sea is quite dramatic and the skies are dark. Its great open fire and red wine weather.
My girlfriends biggest aim this weekend was to see a Kola and a wombat. She is a Kiwi and has only been in Australia a few years and has a hit list of aussie animals she wants to sight. You can pretty much guarantee a kangaroo sighting but the kola was going to be a little more difficult. We settle and for a relaxing weekend and the first morning we wake up and draw back the curtains about 10 kangaroos hoping around outside and feeding. We decide to get up and go for a short run down the road and as we are about 100m from the house we spot a kola on the ground. She is so excited. He is pretty relaxed just feeding away on a branch and she is able to get very close and snap a great close up picture. That photo has been the screen saver on her phone ever since.
Our accommodation was fantastic with views over the rolling hills all the way to the ocean. Its a new 4 bedroom house with a great kitchen and open fire place. If you are looking for a great winter getaway I can highly recommend Kangaroo Island.
