This has to be one of the most beautiful drives that I have ever taken. I was keen to get away from the coast and the tourists so I chose a route on the map that would direct me towards the mountains. It added a few hours to my drive but well worth it. After a big 10 hour drive the day before I was keen to have a shorter day and try and to arrive somewhere early enough to have a look around. The only downside about road trips on your own is not getting a little rest during the day whilst driving. “Oh, and trying to navigate in places where you can’t read the signs.”
I pulled into a little town in France called Grenoble to have a rest and get some food but decided I couldn’t drive any more. It was around 5:30pm and I had’t booked any accommodation so I quickly jumped online and found a little cheap hotel in the centre of town. The perfect location and great staff for a quick stop over to check out Grenoble. Grenoble is a fantastic little town with hipster type vibe. A lot of younger people that appear to be locals and older people that look like they have moved there for the lifestyle. The town is completely surrounded by mountains, the Parc Naturel Régional de Chartreuse and the Isère river also runs through it. One place I would love to go back to in the winter.
The next day I head off towards to Turnio, Italy not really sure were I am going to stop but I finally decided late in the day again to push on to Lake Como. So glad I did. The drive from Grenoble to the Italian border through this part of France is now one of my favourite drives of all time. The scenery through the mountains is stunning. The only downside is the number of tolls that you are hit with if you take the motorway. There is another road that runs through the smaller towns below the motorway that I would take next time. I think this trip cost me around $200 AUD in tolls. We were diverted of the highway through one small town as I think the road was closed because of the the Tour de France. The roads are amazing and need to be for the amount of money people are paying. The speed limit most of the way is 130kph and you can easily sit on 140-160kph with no problems. Which does make the trip seem much quicker. Its interesting because even though the limit is 130kph some people choose to happily sit on 110kph. Everyone knows the rules and no one sits in the right lane.
